January
means swimming season at EGHS. On the 21 January 2020 Edenglen High learners
made their way to the Edenvale public pool to take part in the first inter
house gala of the year for Grade 9-12.
There were many eager learners to get in the pool. Overall, everyone did well but the following
learners were best overall for the day.
Best
overall boy:
JNR Ethan
Kemp
SNR Matthew
Schutte
Best
overall girl:
Kiara Greyling
Ashleigh Gibson
Well done to all learners that participated and to staff for their assistance
With the usual rain on the day of the grade 8 gala, this year the sun was shining bright for our Grade 8’s to enjoy their swim. The grade 8’s followed many years of tradition by walking down to the Edenvale public pool in their respective houses.
The day was filled with chanting and smiles. All learners made an effort to get into the pool and have a try. The leaders were in the pool assisting when needed. The results were as follows for the Grade 8 Inter house Gala:
Best boy overall: Lolan Moonsamy (8A – Lincoln)
Best Girl overall: Yla Jackson (8I – Bismarck)
Overall results:
4th place = Lincoln (78 points)
3rd place = Churchill (89)
2nd place = Smuts (98)
1st place = Bismarck (140)
Thank you to all the Grade 8’s and leaders along with staff for your participation.
Waves of nerves and excitement radiated off the grade 8’s of
Edenglen High, as they said their goodbyes and headed into the hall, where
their 5 year journey at Edenglen high school begins
Once seated in the hall, the teachers and leader body were
introduced and the placement of pupils into their respected classes.
Each class, escorted by their class leader, were given a tour
around the school as well as the do’s and don’ts. The leaders gave the Grade
8’s some advice on how to survive.
During the day, they were issued with their new Edenglen high kit and had the opportunity to interact with both their register teacher and fellow classmates.
After lunch, they were given their first task as a class. Each
class had to prepare a skit of 7 minutes long on any topic they chose. After a
few debates, topics were chosen and practice began.
Just before the end of the day, the grade 8’s returned to the
hall where they would now have to perform the skits that they had prepared
earlier on in the day.
As the day came to a close and the grade 8’s felt a bit more
comfortable. Nerves seemed to have subsided, but boy, if they only knew what
was lying ahead of them.

On 9 October, ten of our top performing
EGD and Physical Science learners in Grade 11, together with Ms Vink attended
the 4th Annual SAA Youth Career Summit.
Aimed at sparking conversation around
the country’s skills requirements and opportunities in aviation, the event
highlighted the wide array of career options available to youth within the
aviation industry in general.
Delegates and students were given unique
insights into a number of professional aviation disciplines such as
engineering, flight operations, logistics, catering, aircraft maintenance,
aviation medicine, and aviation law providing them with first-hand knowledge of
the skills required to run an international airline business.
“I arrived at the event not knowing
anything about aviation, however leaving the centre, I discovered a new field
of science that is not only intriguing but also fun.”
Carmen Naude
“The highlight of the day was hearing
the CEO of SAA technical speak and inspire us with his story, seeing all the
cool planes and learning about all the great opportunities in aviation.”
Ianthe Kuun
“I realised that these jobs are opportunities
that will always be available no matter how technology improves or changes. The
most important message that I took from the day was that you need to
“Define your future.”
Angelique van Niekerk
“I really enjoyed the event. The
aviation companies were very friendly and informative.”
Natania Naidoo
“An incredible event that was filled
with new knowledge, a new understanding of aviation and lots of humour. Truly
an unforgettable event.”
Reiana Pillai
“My experience at the SAA youth
summit was the absolute best. I got to know more about the aviation. I did not
know that there was so much more to just flying a plane. This was definitely an
eye opener and a very successful trip”
Miriam Kayembe
“The trip to SAA was insightful and
informative. It showed me that there are many career options in engineering and
that I don’t have to be restricted to the traditional engineering jobs.”
Mayibongwe Mkandla
“The excursion was very informative and
inspirational. I was made aware of careers of which peaked my interest. The day
was fun and has exposed me to various opportunities.”
“The Golden
Generation”, this was the theme for Edenglen High’s matric farewell for 2019.
On the 21 September 2019, Matric learners and staff arrived at Birchwood Hotel
in Boksburg where the farewell was held. Birchwood’s Serengeti hall was set up
with black and gold décor creating a lovely ambiance for the evening ahead.
Many of the learners arrived in extravagant cars, lavish dresses and suits. Mr. Chalklen and Mrs. Lanyoh were in charge of the evening as they are the Grade 12’s head of grade for 2019.S Speeches were made by the grade heads, which then kicked off the evening with delicious food supplied by Birchwood. Once dinner was eaten and the formalities over with, the Grade 12 learners and a handful of Edenglen High staff members followed onto the dance for after it was opened by previous head perfects and deputies.
Edenglen
High Grade 12 learners all looked amazing and were on their best behavior. We
hope that all the matrics that attended the farewell, had an unforgettable
evening.
Siyabonga
Mphuthi, a grade 11 learner at Edenglen High School, started developing a love
for rugby after playing the sport in grade 8. Siyabonga’s primary school did
not offer rugby as a sport but once he got to high school, he decided to sign
up and play. At first, he did not take it very seriously and it was more for
fun than anything else was. Throughout his first rugby season, Siyabonga fell
in love with the game and wanted to continue playing the sport and take it more
seriously.
Siyabonga
joined the Wasps rugby club and this allowed him to try out for the Golden
Lions U/16 IPT team. Hard Work and dedication allowed him to make the team.
Siyabonga said: ‘’He is grateful for being given the opportunity to be part of
the team and he believes he is now able to showcase his talents at a provincial
level.”’
Siyabonga thanks
the amazing coaches and team members at Edenglen High school for the motivation
and support through the years. Representing the school is such an honour for
him.
Mr Vorster, a physical science teacher at Edenglen High is making science fun with a bi weekly science club that is held for Edenglen High School learners who want to learn more about science.
On Thursday 1 August 2019, the Edenglen High Science club
went on an excursion to Clover.
The Science club, along with Mr Vorster, arrived at the Clover visitor’s center at 12:30. After a photograph of the group, the science club was ushered to the auditorium. They displayed three short movies about the job opportunities at Clover, how the Clover beverages are packaged and how the beverages are made. The tour ended with the students tasting a few of Clover’s beverages. Surprisingly the lactose free milk was very tasty. The students had a wonderful time and were reluctant to leave.
On Wednesday 31 July 2019 Mr Pelser and Ms Vink took 22
willing Edenglen High School learners on an outreach to St. Laurence Haven in
Roodepoort.
The learners and teachers raised funds in order to buy
cleaning supplies and toiletries, which were donated, to the Haven.
Mr. Dempsey donated sport equipment, which we used on our fun
day out.
The boys played soccer and rugby, and the girls all sang
songs, danced and braided each other’s hair. The learners were very eager to help
and make it a memorable day with chips and a juice in hand.
We are blessed to have the platform where we can reach out to our communities and the surrounding areas. Together with Eden Angels, the RCL committee and our amazing sponsors, we were in the privileged position to give to others and have fun while doing some charity work.
